    Gene Shackelford, 88, longtime resident of Stamford passed away peacefully Sunday, March 13, 2016. Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2016 in Johnson Cemetery, Munday, Texas, with Rev. Jesse Morton officiating. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home in Stamford. Arrangements are under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home.

    Gene was born June 15, 1927 in Lockney, Texas, the son of the late Elmer V. and Lorena Mae (Skeens-Stapp) Shackelford. Gene married Billie Hill on April 14, 1945 in Munday, Texas. After 56 years of marriage, Billie preceded Gene in death on January 16, 2002. Gene was a telegraph operator for the Burlington Northern Railroad, retiring after 31 years. He also farmed in the Avoca, Munday, and Haskell areas. In 1957, Gene joined the Stamford Fire Department as a volunteer, serving for 23 years. He was involved for many years with the Texas Cowboy Reunion, working the back gate ticket booth of the rodeo for close to 50 years. He was a member and past president of the Old Timers Association. During his other job capacities, Gene worked at the Stamford American as the circulation manager for John Mooney and also worked as an EMT for the local ambulance service and local funeral home. Gene was one of the first male members to join the Stamford Hospital Auxiliary (Pink Ladies) Association. He was a member and elder for Central Presbyterian Church in Stamford.

    Family preceding Gene in death were his parents; his wife, Billie; a son, Gene (Sonny) Shackelford, Jr.; brother, Arville Parkey; and sister, Jo Ima Hill.

    Family surviving Gene are a daughter, Vickie Shackelford Jones and husband Larry of Abilene; a daughter in law, Marsha Shackelford of Brownwood; five grandchildren, Stacie Stegman of Wylie, Kelly Shackelford of Bowie, Jennifer Guthery of Brownwood, Logan Jones of Crowley, Travis Jones of Abilene; and seven great grandchildren.
