In Loving Memory of
Helen Meade Ray
Helen Meade Ray, 95, of Ridgeland, Mississippi and formerly from Palestine, Texas passed away peacefully Monday, March 14, 2016.
The older of two children, she was born December 21, 1920, in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Mildred Surrette Meade and Henry Meade. She met her husband of 68 years, Joe Eldon Ray who was from Elkhart, Texas, while ice skating in Massachusetts, where he stated, "She was the most beautiful girl on the ice." They had a brief courtship and a whirlwind wedding in Delaware due to the fact that he had to report back to duty with the Army Air Corps. During her husband’s more than 26 years in the military, they traveled throughout the country and overseas to different bases. More than a homemaker, she became the head of the household responsible during his absences with the military. Upon her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, they settled in Palestine in 1966. Helen and Joe had a love for traveling and spent many years traveling around the country and Canada in their fifth wheeler.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Eldon Ray (2011); her brother, Robert Meade; and her parents. She is survived by her son, James E. (Jim) Ray and wife Jackie of Palestine; daughter, Linda Bailey of Raymond, Mississippi; grandson, Robert Bailey; granddaughters,
Shannon (Bailey) Welch and Jody Ray; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
