In Loving Memory of
Harriet Ruth Zaffle
Harriet Ruth Zaffle, 95, a native of Winfred, South Dakota, died on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2016 at a care center in Dallas, Texas.
Graveside service: 11 a.m. Thursday, February 28, 2016 at DFW National Cemetery.
Harriet was born on September 6, 1920, the 5th of 7 children born into the Leicht family. Shortly after her birth, her family would move to Des Moines, Iowa where she would attend and graduate from school. After graduation, she would begin working at an A & P Grocery Store where she would meet the late George T. Zaffle. They would marry on March 21, 1941.
Shortly after their marriage, George would join the US Army, serving proudly in World War II. He would be released from active duty in December of 1945. George would return home, continuing his career, managing retail grocery stores. In 1947, George and Harriet would see the birth of their only child, Suzanne. George would take a job with General Foods managing stores, and the family would move often, living in various locations in Kansas and Missouri.
Harriet was always the consummate homemaker and housewife. While Suzanne was young, she was a positive role model, volunteering as Brownie Leader and being a doting mother. At the age of 35, she would learn to drive, giving her an opportunity to travel to Iowa to visit her family.
In 2002, George and Harriet's health started to decline, they would move to Dallas to be near their daughter. Harriet always joked that she might live in Dallas, but her heart was still in Joplin. When able, Harriet loved to work crossword puzzles and was an avid bridge player.
She was a member of Lake Highlands United Methodist Church.
She leaves behind her daughter, Suzanne Zaffle Cobb.
