James T Hickey
James T. Hickey passed away on March 13, 2016. He was 79 years old. He was born in Corpus Christi to parents James Hickey Jr. and Adeline (Rachal) Hickey. He attended Corpus Christi College Academy, Class of 1955. He attended Del Mar College for two years before joining the United States Air Force, serving in the Reserves from 1957 to 1964. He worked for the Corpus Christi Police Department for 5 years. He went on to work for the Nueces County Sheriffâ€™s Office eventually becoming sheriff in 1982. He served as sheriff for the next 10 years, retiring in 1992. During his time as sheriff he was instrumental in forming the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
He married Sylvia Lopez in 1964 and had two sons, Michael and James. Jim was a lifelong Catholic and active parishioner at St. Patrick Church and St. Thomas More Church. He was a pro-life advocate in both his private and public life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Schoenstatt Movement, and was a member/board member of various other organizations. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jim was a sixth generation Texan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Sylvia and his second wife Jan (Bottomstone). Survivors include his sister Mary Stetson, brothers Christopher and Joseph Hickey; his sons, one granddaughter, Michaella, and two grandsons, Michael and Matthew; various cousins, nephews and nieces.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Seaside Funeral Home followed by a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Thursday March 17, 2016 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Interment to follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
