In Loving Memory of
Don Weil, 97, most recently of Navasota, TX, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 14th, 2015. A communion service will be offered Saturday, September 26 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Huntsville, TX, with Fr. Dean Lawrence officiating and Fr. Jim Morgan assisting. Interment will follow in the St. Stephen’s columbarium where Mr. Weil will join his wife.
Don was born January 15, 1918 to Victor and Viola (Pyles) Weil in Harrisburg, PA, and graduated from John F. Harris High School in Harrisburg in 1936. While serving in the Army Air Corps, he was assigned to Ellington Air Base in Houston, TX, where he met and later married the love of his life, Frances Henderson, in October, 1946 before moving back to PA. Don graduated from Temple University with a BS in Physical Education in 1952.
Don was deeply involved with civic and service youth organizations, and cherished his role as a mentor to youth, most memorably as the General Secretary of the Lock Haven PA YMCA from 1959 to 1970, where he was instrumental in renovating that organization in both the physical and the service sense. He retired from National Gypsum Paper Co. in Milton PA as Personnel Manager and Director of Industrial Relations and Safety in 1983. Don also was an active member of the vestry in each church they attended, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine in PA. Upon their retirement to Texas in 1988, Don and Fran were instrumental in establishing the Huntsville Area Literacy Program in Huntsville, TX, where they tutored individuals and trained tutors for the program. Don was an avid Barbershop singer in both choruses and quartets, and served as Santa Claus in various venues for over 50 years. He loved to golf wherever they lived, but his greatest joy came from the love he shared with his family and friends.
Don leaves behind his daughter Sandra Davis and husband Frank; son, Vic Weil; daughter, Cheryl Rich and husband Jim, and a wide and loving family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as friends and acquaintances across the country.
